And the Player of the year is...

It's getting to that time of year when footballing pundits & experts alike draw up their player & team of the year selections. This year's Premier League has again been full of action, drama, and the usual twists and turns. These are some of the players I feel should be in with a shout of being crowned player of the year. For me, there are four definite standouts -

Nemanja Vidic - Man. United
Regardless of recent errors, Vidic has been head and shoulders over ever player in Man. United's squad this season, and every defender in the league for that matter. He's been outstanding in nearly all his performances for United this season. A real throwback to the old no-nonsense central defenders of yesteryear. He's been the true immovable object at the heart of United's (until recently) watertight defence.

Steven Gerrard - Liverpool
Again Gerrard has been at the centre of everything that is good about Liverpool, this season. His recent run of form is nothing short of outstanding. A true all-round player, Gerrard doesn't only create chances he also finishes them. As usual, his performances have been key to Liverpool's success, they would be lost without him. The man isn't just another player for Liverpool when on form, he is Liverpool F.C.

Frank Lampard - Chelsea
For me, Lampard again this season, has been the perfect example of true model pro. He lives to play for Chelsea and always gives his 100% best for the team. His range of passing & vision is unparalleled, a threat going forward, and again like Gerrard, he is the heartbeat of the team. If Lampard plays well, then the team usually follow suit. He has chipped in with his fair share of goals & assists (currently 10 goals & 7 assists).

Edwin Van Der Sar - Man. United
The man who grabbed his fair share of headlines, from some of the other leagues more high profile players. Going 14 matches without conceding a goal, a full 1,311 minutes in all. He broke several long-standing goalkeeping records this season. Breaking the Premier League, Overall English league, British and World single-season records.

Others players of note, who could be in contention for player of the year -

Phil Jagielka & Mikel Arteta - Everton
Brede Hangeland - Fulham
Stephen Ireland - Man. City
Ashley Young - Aston Villa
Ryan Giggs - Man. United
Robin Van Persie - Arsenal

One thing is for sure, it seems that boy Ronaldo won't be doing the double this year anyway.

  2. I'll probably vote for Edwin van der Sar, he's had an impressive season, and when was the last time a keeper won it anyway?

I have to make one criticism of your post though - Lampard doesn't live for playing for Chelsea, he lives for playing for money: he was offered a contract worth £140,000 a week to stay at the Bridge and he demanded more... Not cool...
