Gimmie a D..Gimmie an ARKNESS!!!

There's a lot to be said for sheer unadulterated high octane Rock n' Roll especially when it's delivered by  Lowestoft's finest The Darkness. They delivered it in spades Wednesday night live a the Palace (as part of their reunion tour) in Melbourne and luckily I was in the crowd to witness it.

It seems they have returned as a stripped down leaner fitter machine, they've even cut down on the Lycra catsuits bar for when Justin donned it for the encore. Minus all these distractions the fans can focus on the music and what a joyous racket they make when their on full tilt!. Led by their as ever charismatic frontman Justin Hawkins, backed by his virtuoso guitarist brother Dan, and rock steady rhythm section of (the ever fabulously attired) bassist Frankie Poullain and drummer Ed Graham, they quite literally ripped the Palace a new one Wednesday night.

They had one simple mission statement for the night and that was to rock!!. I had expected the Darkness to be good but I wasn't prepared for what greeted me Wednesday night. It was a privilege to say I was at the gig (almost like seen a 70s Led Zeppelin or AC/DC in their full pomp), from the opener 'Black Shuck' all the  'Love on the Rocks with No Ice' .

It's no secret that the Hawkins senior is the star of the Darknesses live shows and he has lost none of his appeal since coming back from his various off stage troubles. Humour is never to far away when he's around and Wednesday night it came in the form of him being covered in various items of clothing thrown at him from the adoring crowd. He started off by asking for a vest/singlet from the crowd only to end up being covered in about for layers of clothes, bra's, leggings, a fake wig, and a feather boa.

It was one hell of the gig I can easily say I wasn't the only on who left on a buzz, as was confirmed by my fellow punters faces plastered with beaming smiles and chatting way in excited tones. It was one of those gigs you rued not learning the guitar when you were a kid, but we can all dream of (still) being rock stars. Mr. Hawkins bellowed towards the end of the gig 'tell your friends the fucking Darkness are back..and after that performance who am I to argue. LONG LIVE THE DARKNESS!!
