The Travel 'B-Sides' - Side One

It’s hardly much of an attempt at a travel blog if I didn't mention more than half the places we’ve been to. So I’m going to attempt to correct that wrong and create some posts that showcase the places we’ve been and what I remember of them, including some highlights.

Austria

It was nice, pleasant and a bit boring. We visited the country in the wintertime which probably didn’t help. Salzburg was nice and quaint. However, we spent too long there, and it wasn’t particularly memorable. Vienna was like a city version of Salzburg. I actually quite enjoyed it (my wife not so much), it’s a beautiful city, but again it didn’t stick long in our memories.

Highlights: Nice buildings and scenery, the cable car to Untersberg, the Sound of Music Tour.

Belgium
In the of summer 2014, my wife and I attended a music festival in Landgraaf in the Netherlands, and we were staying just over the border in German border in a town called Aachen.

One day we missed our turn-off on the Autobahn from Aachen and crossed the Dutch/German borderending up in Maastricht, Netherlandswhere we decided to have dinner.

Halfway through dinner, I realized we weren’t exactly a million miles away from the Belgian border either.  So an hour or so later we were having after-dinner drinks in Liège at a craft food festival-thus rounding out our unintentional European culinary day. Liège seemed fine by the way.

Highlights: The Belgian beer, the random food festival.

Denmark

We loved Denmark, but again, we visited one cityCopenhagen. We visited Copenhagen for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014.

The Eurovision wasn't actually all that bad, and the city itself was beautiful. It was very laid back and stylish coupled with that classic old-world Nordic charm.

Highlights: Tivoli Park (the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world), the Carlsberg brewery and Nyhavn.

Ethiopia
Well now, seeing as we only overnighted in Addis Ababa any summary of Ethiopia would be quite the fib. However, I can say that the size of Addis was impressive and it was heaving with people and every mode of transport known to man.

I went to go for a quick walk the morning of our departure, but the forbidding and heavily-armed security guards stationed at the hotel's entrance dissuaded me from venturing too far from the hotel premises.

Highlights: N/A.

Fiji
This one was an unplanned solo trip. More specifically, it was a solo, stress-filled 48-hour visa renewal trip. Needless to say, my memories of Fiji are extremely hazy as I wasn't in the particular right frame of mind for travel at the time.

However, I do remember the more than welcoming and friendly locals (Bula, Bula), the beautiful beaches and the relaxed 'Fiji time'.

Highlights: The beaches, the locals.

France Ah Oui! Like our visit to Denmark, we have only visited one city thus far in FranceParis

What can you say about Paris that hasn't been said before? It is a quite stunning city, full of charm, sophistication, fashion etc. It's also a bit overrated, and we found the Parisians to be a smidge rude.

Highlights: Sacré-Cœur, the Seine river cruise, our bike tour of the city.

Georgia
Still one of our favourite ever destinations. Both my wife and I, cannot speak highly enough of the gem of the Caucasus. We loved every minute of our time there.

The Georgians were very nice, and
their hospitality was unrivalled. The food and wine were amazing, the scenery, the turbulent history, the old sites and beautiful churches. Plus, it's not every day you get the visit the humble home of one of the 20th century's most divisive of figures.

Highlights:
Joseph Stalin Museum, Gori,  Uplistsikhe, Khachapuri (a taste of heaven)
